WHAT YOU MAY QUOTE · AND HOW

FOR THE PRESS

Plain facts about the Index of Life in Common, taken from the published data file, with the wording we ask you to use and the claims we ask you not to make.

01

KEY FACTS

  • Twelve worlds of life; 171 countries ranked, each with scores in at least 10 of the 12 worlds (edition 3, 2026-10-06).
  • 12 indicators from open sources: World Bank World Development Indicators and Worldwide Governance Indicators, UNESCO World Heritage and Intangible Heritage lists.
  • Status: pilot. Scores are percentile places calculated by us; countries without records on the UNESCO lists score 0 on the world that uses them.
  • The data file may be reused under CC BY-SA 4.0 with attribution.
02

YOU MAY SAY

  • An experimental, open-data index of conditions for life in common.
  • Scores are relative places among countries, not absolute measures.
  • Method, sources and limits are published and the calculation can be repeated.
03

PLEASE DO NOT SAY

  • That it ranks the best countries to live in, or measures how good or happy people’s lives are.
  • That it is official, or endorsed by the World Bank or UNESCO: their names only identify the sources.
  • That a country’s place is a verdict on its people.

HOW TO CITE

  • Use the line below, with the link.
  • If you change the data or the scores, say so (CC BY-SA 4.0 requires it).
  • Corrections are welcome: write to us and we will check them against the sources.
